Tips for Water Pump Servicing & Installation:
  1. Clean and reinstall the coolant recovery reservoir before flushing the cooling system.
  2. Flush the cooling system completely, using power flush equipment or thermal cycling the system with clean water three times. The most effective method of system flushing is to use a coolant exchanger, following the manufacturer's operating instructions.
  3. Do not use any non-approved flush agents, and replace the coolant according to manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Clean all sealing surfaces, and make sure all old gasket material is removed before installing your replacement component.
  5. Never strike the water pump shaft, since this will damage the new water pump.
  6. Torque all bolts according to the manufacturer's specifications, and adjust belts to proper tension (if applicable) to manufacturer's specifications.
  7. Use sealant tabs only if recommended. Some sealant tabs or similar compounds may restrict coolant flow through the passages of some cooling systems.
  8. With the new pump installed, turn the hub by hand and check for rotation.
  9. After installation, pressure-test the system for leaks and check for sufficient fan blade clearance between the blade and radiator shroud.
  10. Inspect related components in the cooling system, including your fan blades, fan clutch, engine mounts, radiator, belts and hoses, and reservoir.
Every belt driven water pump has a weep hole that might leak a little in the beginning. Some seepage from the weep hole is normal during the break-in period (about 10 minutes), and does not indicate a defect.
Cooling System Maintenance | Tips & Tools

Without regular maintenance, cooling system components will degrade and fail prematurely, which can lead to costly engine damage. Protect your engine with simple preventative maintenance:

  • Completely drain and flush the system using Cooling System Flush prior to installation. Flushing the system is critical to prevent system contamination and failure.
  • Consider replacing the Radiator Hoses (and Hose Clamps), Thermostat and Radiator Cap as part of routine preventative maintenance. System contamination can cause these parts to degrade and fail over time, which can lead to severe engine damage from overheating.
  • Refill radiator with fresh Coolant / Antifreeze according to the volume and formula specified in your Owner's Manual. Inspect levels and condition every year.
